SUMMARY We examined 20 300 raw shell chicken eggs sold at retail stores in Japan for Salmonella outside and inside eggs. The eggs were purchased at 220 retail stores throughout Japan between August 2007 and January 2008. Of 2030 pooled egg samples (10 eggs/sample), Salmonella was isolated from five shell samples (0·25%), but not from any of egg-content samples. The serovars of the isolates were Salmonella Enteritidis (2), S. Derby, S. Livingstone and S. Cerro. The samples positive for…
Detection of Salmonella spp in commercial eggs in Iran
TLDR
The results of the present study provide the recent dataset of the prevalence of S. enteritidis and S. typhimurium in eggs at retail shops in the northwest of Iran.
National surveillance of Salmonella Enteritidis in commercial eggs in Japan
TLDR
The prevalence of S. Enteritidis in commercial eggs in Japan is estimated at ∼0·003% which was a tenfold decrease in prevalence compared to similar surveillance in the mid 1990s, which is considered a contributory factor in the decrease of foodborne diseases associated in this period.
Salmonella serovars isolated from table eggs: An overview
TLDR
How ST is not often isolated from table eggs and that contamination of table eggs with SE and SO is more frequent is shown, showing how SE appears to play a major role in egg contamination.
Prevalence and Antibiotic Resistance of Salmonella Species Isolated from Chicken Eggs by Standard Bacteriological Method
TLDR
The prevalence difference did not show statistical significance between the rate of detecting Salmonella spp.
Risk factors for Salmonella prevalence in laying-hen farms in Japan
TLDR
Efforts to reduce human salmonellosis in Japan should continue to focus on the establishment of control measures in laying-hen farms, especially those with windowless houses implementing induced moulting and equipped with in-line egg processing.
ISOLATION , IDENTIFICATION AND ANTIBIOGRAM OF SALMONELLA ENTERICA FROM CHICKEN EGGS COLLECTED FROM SELECTED WARDS IN MOROGORO MUNICIPALITY
Eggs provide protein to human. However, consumption of contaminated eggs with pathogenic Salmonellae (Salmonella enterica) imposes negative impacts to human health causing salmonellosis. The present
Possible horizontal transmission of Salmonella via reusable egg trays in Thailand.
TLDR
The distribution of the related genotypes and resistance patterns of Salmonella in egg farms and the market indicate drug-resistant strains of Saltoella may be spread on reusable egg trays.
Effects of cold-water egg shell washing on Salmonella contamination in the shell and its contents
TLDR
Cold water washing, as a simple and low-cost method at the community level can be used to improve the health of eggs and shells and eliminate Salmonella contamination in eggs.
Effects of cold-water egg shell washing on Salmonella contamination in the shell and its contents
Abstract Background: Egg shell washing is one of the simple and inexpensive methods using by many people to clean egg shells. Objective: In this study, the effects of egg shell washing (with 5° C
Genomic Investigation of Antimicrobial-Resistant Salmonella enterica Isolates From Dead Chick Embryos in China
TLDR
It is proposed that the day-old breeder chicks trading could be one of the potential pathways for the dissemination of multidrug-resistant S. enterica serovars causing chick embryo death in Henan province, highlighting the advanced approach by using genomic characterization and statistical analysis, in conducting the routine monitoring of the emerging antimicrobial-resistant pathogens.

Detection of Salmonella in Spent Hens and Eggs Associated with Foodborne Infections
TLDR
About 16,000 spent hens from 23 farms in the northern area of Japan were purchased in 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999 to isolate Salmonella in two poultry processing plants, finding the major serotypes were Enteritidis, Corvallis, Typhimurium, and Infantis.

Shokuhin eiseigaku zasshi. Journal of the Food Hygienic Society of Japan
  • 2009
TLDR
Salmonella was detected in liquid egg in which the aerobic bacteria counts were in the range of 10(2) to 10(6) cfu/g, and foodborne outbreaks of Salmonella infections associated with liquid egg were analyzed.
Investigation of Salmonella contamination and disinfection in farm egg-packing plants.
TLDR
It is apparent that contamination in egg-packing plants may be a significant contributory factor to external contamination of shell eggs, and improved methods of cleaning and disinfecting egg-handling equipment are required.
A survey of Salmonella enteritidis in spent hens and its relation to farming style in Hokkaido, Japan.
TLDR
Salmonella including Salmonella enteritidis (SE) and SE-antibodies in commercial layer hen flocks in Hokkaido, the northern prefecture of Japan, a survey of spent layer hens was performed, from August 1996 to January 1997.
Comparison of Salmonella isolation rates in different types of egg-layer hen houses in Chiba, Japan.
TLDR
The Salmonella isolation rate in hen houses seems to be associated with whether the premises are windowless or open, and roof rats appear to be the most important vectors in the spread of S. enteritidis in the windowless hen house.
Antimicrobial susceptibilities of Salmonella isolates obtained from layer chicken houses on a commercial egg-producing farm in Japan, 1997 to 2002.
TLDR
The results suggest that Salmonella Montevideo isolates that had already acquired resistance may have been introduced into the layer houses, although the route and vehicle of transmission were uncertain.
Salmonella penetration of egg shells and proliferation in broiler hatching eggs--a review.
TLDR
A better understanding of the material in this review paper will assist poultry researchers and the poultry industry in continuing to make progress in reducing and eliminating salmonellae from fertile hatching eggs, hatcheries, and breeder flocks.
The role of roof rats (Rattus rattus) in the spread of Salmonella Enteritidis and S. Infantis contamination in layer farms in eastern Japan
TLDR
The results suggest that roof rats are carriers of S. Enteritidis and S. Infantis and that persistent S. infantis infections in a rat population may play an important role in the spread and maintenance of these pathogens inside the layer premises.
Antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella isolates from apparently healthy food-producing animal from 2000 to 2003: the first stage of Japanese veterinary antimicrobial resistance monitoring (JVARM).
TLDR
Antimicrobial susceptibility of 183 Salmonella isolates from apparently healthy food-producing animals obtained during the period from 2000 to 2003 throughout Japan was examined andSalmonella Infantis was the most prevalent, followed by S. Typhimurium.
Detection of Salmonella enterica in Naturally Contaminated Liquid Eggs by Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification, and Characterization of Salmonella Isolates
TLDR
The LAMP assay is rapid, specific, and sensitive for Salmonella detection in liquid eggs and is able to monitorSalmonella contamination in egg-handling plants more reliably.
