Each state in Australia individually regulates safety with the State of Victoria having a population of 5 million people. In June 2000 Victoria enacted the Occupational Health and Safety (Major Hazard Facilities) Regulations. These Regulations were made following the 1998 incident at the Esso Longford gas plant to further promote the safe operation of major hazard facilities in the state.
