The synergistic effect of tri-n-octylamine (R/sub 3/N) on the solvent extraction of thorium by thenoyltrifluoroacetone (HT) has been shown to arise from the organic-phase reaction ThT/sub 4/ + R/sub 3/NHCl = ThT/sub 4/R/sub 3/ NHCl, where R/sub 3/NHCl represents the amine hydrochloride and T- the enolate ion of HT.
