The initial paper of this series (Jennings and de Jesus, Jr., 1968) reported a pronounced negative association between competitive ability in varietal mixtures and yield capacity in pure stands in distinct plant types of rice (Oryza sativa L.). Tall, leafy, spreading, tropical types were more competitive but yielded less than short-statured, small-leaved, erect, agronomically desirable types of temperate origin.
