For the last twenty years there has been little in improvement in the performance of Brunei students in the Cambridge O Level English examination and this has been the cause of some concern. In this study, a group of practising teachers were surveyed to find out what they perceived to be the main obstacles to success, and a number of student scripts were analyzed to see to what extent the students’ scripts confirmed the teachers’ perceptions.
