Sodium chlorite, a new commercial chemical, is now being used for bleaching textiles and paper pulp. It is a moderately strong oxidizing agent whose use does not introduce the possibility of heavy metal contamination. The solid sodium chlorite is stable and very soluble. Its solutions are stable in the presence of a trace of alkalinity if light is excluded. They decompose but slowly if boiled.
