Certain sleep-wake schedule disorders (SWSDs) cannot be successfully managed clinically using conventional methods of sleep therapy. We describe two cases of SWSD, the first following head trauma and the second originating during childhood, that had been misdiagnosed by physicians for many years. After conventional treatment for SWSD with light therapy and melatonin failed to bring about substantial improvement, it was determined that they were suffering from an incurable disability. Hence, we…
Behavioral and psychiatric consequences of sleep-wake schedule disorders
TLDR
Physiological data and genetic studies in patients with CRSDs suggest that these disorders result from abnormal functioning of the circadian timing system, and recognition and awareness of these disorders should prevent years of erroneous diagnosis and treatment in patients.
Diagnóstico dos transtornos do sono relacionados ao ritmo circadiano
TLDR
The new international classification of circadian rhythm sleep disorders is reviewed and it is important to keep these two disorders in mind, since they can be confused with insomnia and excessive sleepiness.
Diagnosis of circadian rhythm sleep disorders.
TLDR
The new international classification of circadian rhythm sleep disorders is reviewed and it is important to keep these two disorders in mind, since they can be confused with insomnia and excessive sleepiness.
Clinical Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Intrinsic Circadian Rhythm Sleep-Wake Disorders: Advanced Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder (ASWPD), Delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder (DSWPD), Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Rhythm Disorder (N24SWD), and Irregular Sleep-Wake Rhythm Disorder (ISWRD). An Update for 20
A systematic literature review and meta-analyses (where appropriate) were performed and the GRADE approach was used to update the previous American Academy of Sleep Medicine Practice Parameters on
Delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder
TLDR
This comprehensive chapter covers manifold aspects of delayed sleep-wake phase disorder, which captures predominantly adolescents and young adults in misalignment with the timing of the light-dark cycle and is associated with considerable disability.
Actigraphic study of sleep behaviour in sickling patients
TLDR
Sleep parameters revealed that sickling patients had lower assumed sleep duration, and exhibited less sleep efficiency as compared to that of the control subjects, and Alterations of circadian rhythm and deterioration of sleep could be attributed to diseased status.

TLDR
The characteristics of CRSD, diagnosis, treatment as well as their relationship to psychopathology, psychotropic drugs and head trauma are described.
Chronobiology and insomnia: pathophysiology and treatment of circadian rhythm sleep disorders
This review summarizes current knowledge of sleep disorders with a chronobiological basis, including: delayed sleep phase syndrome, advanced sleep phase syndrome, non24 h sleep–wake syndrome and
Circadian rhythm sleep disorders.
TLDR
The circadian rhythm syndromes included in the new International Classification of Sleep Disorders are reviewed as well as the most recent guidelines for diagnosis and treatment.

The delayed sleep phase syndrome: clinical and investigative findings in 14 subjects.
TLDR
The syndrome causes severe disruption to education, work and family life, and different patterns of sleep phase delay seen in the syndrome include stable, progressive, irregular and non-24 hour sleep-wake cycles.
Evaluating the role of melatonin in the long-term treatment of delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS).
TLDR
Examination of the efficiency of melatonin treatment in a relatively large population of DSPS subjects by means of subjective reports found that the pretreatment falling asleep and waking times of patients in whom the changes were retained for a relatively long period of time were significantly earlier than those of patients whose relapse was immediate.
Delayed sleep phase syndrome. A chronobiological disorder with sleep-onset insomnia.
TLDR
A new syndrome called "delayed sleep phase insomnia" is described, which is proposed to be a disorder of the circadian sleep-wake rhythm in which the "advance" portion of the phase response curve is small.
Chronotherapy: resetting the circadian clocks of patients with delayed sleep phase insomnia.
TLDR
A brief drug-free rescheduling treatment for Delayed Sleep Phase insomnia, a syndrome characterized by sleep-onset insomnia with difficulty in morning awakening, which was designed to reset patients' biological clocks by the phase delay route.
Circadian rhythm sleep disorders: toward a more precise definition and diagnosis.
TLDR
A survey of the characteristics of patients suffering from circadian rhythm sleep disorders, a case-control study comparing a group of 50 CRSD patients and 56 age- and gender-matched normal subjects, and a proposal for new guidelines for improving the diagnosis of CRSDs are presented.
Vitamin B12 treatment for sleep-wake rhythm disorders.
TLDR
Vitamin B12 (VB12) was administered to two patients suffering for many years from different sleep-wake rhythm disorders, one of which was a 15-year-old blind girl suffering from a free-running sleep- wake rhythm (hypernychthemeral syndrome), and after administration of VB12 at the daily doses of 1.5 mg, the man suffering from delayed sleep phase syndrome was improved.

THE TREATMENT OF SLEEP DISORDERS WITH MELATONIN
TLDR
While the response was not always complete, the study clearly showed that melatonin has an important role in the treatment of certain types of chronic sleep disorders.
Delayed sleep phase syndrome response to melatonin
Melatonin, and delayed sleep phase syndrome: ambulatory polygraphic evaluation
TLDR
Previous data obtained by a sleep-wake subjective diary on the efficacy of melatonin DSPS are confirmed, and mean advances in sleep onset time and in final awakening hour are confirmed.
