The Simple Knowledge Organisation System (SKOS) is a vocabulary intended for the representation of Knowledge Organisation Systems (KOS) such as thesauri, term lists and controlled vocabularies. The SKOS data model is defined using an RDF schema so that it fits in with existing Semantic Web technologies. We speculate how SKOS artefacts may be used in combination with other knowledge artefacts, such as ontologies represented in the Web Ontology Language (OWL) . The SKOS schema is currently OWL…
Exploring and Exploiting(?) the Awkward Connections Between SKOS and OWL
TLDR
This work defines usage patterns to detect problematic modeling from connections between SKOS and OWL and investigates if additional information can be inferred from joint usage with SKOS in order to enrich semantic inferences through OWL alone.
A Semantic Web based approach to expertise finding at KPMG
TLDR
The main goal of this research was to investigate how Semantic Web techniques could be used to increase the findability and accessibility of the employee expertise information inside organizations.
Ontology engineering: Current state, challenges, and future directions
TLDR
An overview of how the ontology engineering field has evolved in the last decade is given and some of the unsolved issues and opportunities for future research are discussed.
Expressiveness and machine processability of Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS): an analysis of concepts and relations
TLDR
It is harder to represent subject headings and classification schemes as semantic networks with nodes and arcs, while thesauri are more suitable for such a representation.
A Simple Approach towards SKOSification of Digital Repositories
TLDR
This short paper presents an approach to expose taxonomies, classification schemes and other types of vocabularies as SKOS by developing a mapping tool and visualizes the output in a graphical user interface in order to explore the vocABularies along with their relationships as well.
Thesaurus maintenance, alignment and publication as linked data: the AGROVOC use case
TLDR
The AGROVOC multilingual thesaurus maintained by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations is now published as linked data and current and future applications and directions are discussed.
Semantic integration of social and domain knowledge in a collaborative network platform
The Main goal of this dissertation, partially integrated in the works of the European project H-Know, in the the Colnet Group of INESC Porto, is to integrate semantic capabilities of classification
Using SPIN to Formalise XBRL Accounting Regulations on the Semantic Web
TLDR
This paper investigates the use of the SPARQL Inferencing Notation with RDF to formalise these accounting regulations found across XBRL jurisdictional taxonomies and investigates how SPIN enhanced formalisation enables financial instrument fact inferencing and sophisticated consistency checking.

Reengineering Thesauri for New Applications: The AGROVOC Example
TLDR
A conceptual structure and transition procedure to support the shift from a traditional KOS towards a full-fledged and semantically rich KOS is presented and the rules-as-you-go approach to streamlining the reengineering process is explored.
