The cyanobacterium (blue^green alga) Planktothrix perornata [Skuja] Anagnostidis and KomaŁ rek grows in channel cat¢sh Ictalurus punctatus (Ra¢nesque) aquaculture ponds in the southeastern United States and produces the ‘musty’compound 2-methylisoborneol (MIB). Cat¢sh will rapidly absorb MIB into their £esh resulting in a musty taint, thereby rendering them unpalatable and unmarketable until MIB is purged.
