One of the distinct features of land use of north eastern region of India is the prevalence of shifting cultivation. This study aims to map the dynamics of shifting cultivation and shifting cultivation hotspots using satellite remote sensing and GIS technology. The spatial and temporal extent of shifting cultivation is observed during 1987-88, 1997, 2005 and 2010. A decrease in shifting cultivation practice was observed after 1997.
