Schistosomiasis is a snail-borne neglected tropical disease affecting 78 countries and territories in Africa, Asia, South America and the Middle East.Three species are highly pathogenic to man namely Schistosoma japonicum, S. mansoni and S. haematobium. In the Philippines, the endemic species is S. japonicum to which 2.5 million Filipinos are directly exposed.
