Increased ventilation in response to hypoxia has been appreciated for over a century, but the biochemistry underlying this response remains poorly understood. Here we define a pathway in which increased minute ventilation ([Vdot]E ) is signalled by deoxyhaemoglobin-derived S-nitrosothiols (SNOs).
