A spectacular new genus of Staphylinini rove beetle from the tropical Andes and its phylogenetic assessment (Coleoptera : Staphylinidae)

A dataset of 68 morphological characters scored for 34 taxa representing a broad sample of the respective rove beetle tribe, and Bayesian inference and maximum parsimony phylogenetic analyses unambiguously placed Devilleferus as sister to the subtribe Amblyopinina, corroborated recently established subtribal systematics for Staphylinini inferred mainly from molecular markers.

Pupae of the mega-diverse rove beetle tribe Staphylinini (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae): their traits and systematic significance

The first-ever attempt to employ the morphological characters of these pupae in phylogenetic analysis shows that the external structures of Staphylinini pupae could be a useful, alternative source for assessing the relationships of certain taxa within a tribe.

Preliminarily this new genus is thought to be a member of the lineage of Staphylinini which includes genera Anchocerus Fauvel, 1905, Acylophorus Nordmann, 1837, Anaquedius CASE, 1915, Hemiquedius Casey, 1915 and possibly Euryporus Erichson, 1839, all of which are current members of the subtribe Quediina.

Consistent with the adult morphology and DNA sequences, larvae‐based cladistic analysis confirms that Q. antipodum should not be placed in the north temperate genus Quedius, however, larval analysis alone remains dubious with respect to finding the exact sister relationships of that species.
