We study the low-energy effective field equations that couple gravity, the dilaton, and the bulk closed string tachyon of bosonic closed string theory. We establish that whenever the tachyon induces the rolling process, the string metric remains fixed while the dilaton rolls to strong coupling. For negative definite potentials we show that this results in an Einstein metric that crunches the universe in finite time. This behavior is shown to be rather generic even if the potentials are not…

Closed string tachyon: inflation and cosmological collapse

Starting with a compactification of critical bosonic string theory on an internal space with constant curvature, we look for conditions upon which an assumed closed string tachyon potential drives an

Closed string tachyon driving f(R) cosmology

To study quantum effects on the bulk tachyon dynamics, we replace R with f(R) in the low-energy effective action that couples gravity, the dilaton, and the bulk closed string tachyon of bosonic

Backreaction in closed string tachyon condensation

We consider backreaction due to production of massless strings in the background of a condensing closed string tachyon. Working in the region of weak tachyon, we find the modified equations of motion

Towards a nonsingular tachyonic big crunch

We discuss an effective field theory background containing the gravitational field, the dilaton, and a closed string tachyon, and couple this background to a gas of fundamental strings and D strings.

Toy models for closed string tachyon solitons

We present qualitative evidence that closed string tachyon solitons describe backgrounds of lower-dimensional sub-critical string theory. We show that a co-dimension one soliton in the low energy

Cosmological Signature of Tachyon Condensation

We consider the dynamics of the open string tachyon condensation in a framework of the cubic fermionic String Field Theory including a non-minimal coupling with closed string massless modes, the

A tachyon lump in closed string field theory

We find a codimension one lump solution of closed bosonic string field theory. We consider vertices up to quartic order and include in the string field the tachyon, the ghost dilaton, and a metric

A tachyon lump in closed string field theory

We find a codimension one lump solution of closed bosonic string field theory. We consider vertices up to quartic order and include in the string field the tachyon, the ghost dilaton, and a metric

Supersymmetric closed string tachyon cosmology: a first approach

We give a worldline supersymmetric formulation for the effective action of closed string tachyon in a FRW background. This is done considering that, as shown by Vafa, the effective theory of closed

AdS bubbles, entropy and closed string tachyons

We study the conjectured connection between AdS bubbles (AdS solitons) and closed string tachyon condensations. We confirm that the entanglement entropy, which measures the degree of freedom,

Closed string tachyons and their implications for non-supersymmetric strings

Closed string tachyons have long been somewhat mysterious. We note that there is often a regime in the classical moduli space in which one can systematically compute the effective action for such

Twisted tachyon condensation in closed string field theory

We consider twisted tachyons on /N orbifolds of bosonic closed string theory. It has been conjectured that these tachyonic instabilities correspond to decays of the orbifolds into flat space or into

Solvable time-dependent model and rolling closed string tachyon

We investigate the SL(2,R)/U(1) WZW model with level 0<k<2 as a solvable time-dependent background in string theory. This model is expected to be dual to the one describing a rolling closed string

Universality of the tachyon potential

Using string field theory, we argue that the tachyon potential on a D-brane in bosonic string theory in arbitrary background has a universal form, independent of the boundary conformal field theory

A Review on Tachyon Condensation in Open String Field Theories

We review the recent studies of tachyon condensation in string field theory. After introducing the open string field theory both for bosonic string and for superstring, we use them to examine the

Closed string tachyon condensation in spacetime generates potentials on the worldsheet that model two-dimensional inflationary cosmology. These models illustrate and elucidate a variety of aspects of

The equation of motion of the tachyon field is obtained by requiring conformal invariance of the closed bosonic string propagator in a tach Lyon background by means of the Kosterlitz-Thouless flow equations.

Liouville theory with a negative norm boson and no screening charge corresponds to an exact classical solution of closed bosonic string theory describing time-dependent bulk tachyon condensation. A
