Obesity is a common disorder, and related diseases such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and cancer are a major cause of mortality and morbidity in Western-type societies. Development of obesity is associated with extensive modifications in adipose tissue involving adipogenesis, angiogenesis and extracellular matrix proteolysis. The fibrinolytic (plasminogen/plasmin) and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) systems cooperate in these processes. A nutritionally…

TLDR
Venous or arterial thrombosis models in obese mice confirm a prothrombotic risk associated with obesity and a role of the fibrinolytic and matrix metalloproteinase systems in these processes.
Circulating and adipose tissue matrix metalloproteinases in cardiometabolic risk environments: pathophysiological aspects
Abstract Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play an important role during physiological tissue remodeling in embryonic development and angiogenesis, as well as in pathophysiological conditions such as
Adipocyte extracellular matrix composition, dynamics and role in obesity
TLDR
In the obese, overgrowth of adipocytes may lead to instability of the ECM, possibly mediated by hypoxia.
Altered Expression of Matrix Metalloproteinases and Their Tissue Inhibitors in Matured Rat Adipocytes in Vitro
TLDR
In obese adipocytes cultured under conditions of high or low glucose and with or without insulin supplementation, there was altered expression of adipokines, similar to the change in adipose tissue in obese subjects, and the expression of MMP3 and TIMP3 was inhibited.
Macrophage elastase (MMP-12) in expanding murine adipose tissue.
Obesity-associated insulin resistance is correlated to adipose tissue vascular endothelial growth factors and metalloproteinase levels
TLDR
It is proposed that the alteration in MMP15, VEGF-B, V EGF-C and VegF-D gene expression may be caused by one of the relevant adipose tissue processes related to the development of IR, and the up-regulation of VEGf-A in adipose tissues could have a relationship with the prevention of this pathology.
Inhibition of MMP-13 prevents diet-induced obesity in mice and suppresses adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes
TLDR
It is suggested that MMP-13 may play a major role in adipose development and its inhibition could be a potential strategy to prevent obesity.
Recent advances and future avenues in understanding the role of adipose tissue cross talk in mediating skeletal muscle mass and function with ageing
TLDR
Evidence that adiposity may exacerbate age-related sarcopenia is provided and some emerging concepts of adipose-skeletal muscle communication including the secretion and processing of novel myokine and adipokines and the role of extracellular vesicles in mediating inter-tissue cross talk via lncRNAs and miRNAs are outlined in the context of sarc Openia, ageing, and obesity.

Enhanced expression of PAI–1 in visceral fat: Possible contributor to vascular disease in obeisty
TLDR
Data suggest that an enhanced expression of the PAI–1 gene in visceral fat may increase plasma levels and may have a role in the development of vascular disease in visceral obesity.
Adipocyte hypertrophy in stromelysin-3 deficient mice with nutritionally induced obesity.
TLDR
The hypertrophy observed in this model is, however, not related to changes in fibrinolytic parameters, as suggested by the finding that levels of t-PA, u-PA and PAI-1 antigen as well as t- PA and U-PA activity were not different in SC or GON adipose tissue extracts of both genotypes.
Influence of PAI-1 on adipose tissue growth and metabolic parameters in a murine model of diet-induced obesity.
TLDR
An effect of PAI-1 on weight gain and adipose tissue cellularity in the induction of obesity in mice is supported and the elevated expression of PAi-1 observed in human obesity could be involved in mechanisms that control adipOSE tissue development.
Modulation of adipose tissue expression of murine matrix metalloproteinases and their tissue inhibitors with obesity.
TLDR
In vitro conversion of adipogenic 3T3-F442A cells into mature adipocytes was associated with substantial modulations of MMP and TIMP expression, and this in vitro adipogenesis was reduced in the presence of a synthetic MMP inhibitor.
Adipose tissue mass can be regulated through the vasculature
TLDR
It is concluded that adipose tissue mass is sensitive to angiogenesis inhibitors and can be regulated by its vasculature, which is associated with anti-angiogenic weight loss.
In vivo plasminogen deficiency reduces fat accumulation.
TLDR
Differences in the stromal cell population are responsible for the reduced adipose tissue accumulation in the Plg-/- mice, and that the plasminogen system plays an important role in adiposes tissue accumulation.

Nutritionally Induced Obesity Is Attenuated in Transgenic Mice Overexpressing Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1
TLDR
High circulating PAI-1 levels attenuate nutritionally induced obesity and may be related to modifications in adipose tissue cellularity affecting weight and plasma metabolic parameters.
Production of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor 1 by Human Adipose Tissue: Possible Link Between Visceral Fat Accumulation and Vascular Disease
TLDR
The results strongly suggest that human adipose tissue, in particular visceral tissue, can be an important contributor to the elevated plasma PAI-1 levels observed in central obesity.
Adipose tissue expression of gelatinases in mouse models of obesity.
TLDR
The presence of MMP-2 in the adipose tissue was confirmed immunologically and its localization in adipocytes revealed by immunogold electron microscopy and by mRNA determination using competitive RT-PCR, and the contribution of active M MP-2 to the total level was comparable in SFD and HFD groups.
