Periodontal disease, a gingival inflammatory disease caused by gram-negative bacteria, is the main cause of tooth loss. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) present in bacterial cell walls induce human gingival fibroblasts' production of pro-inflammatory cytotoxins such as IL-1beta and TNFalpha.
