Similar to other amphetamine analogs 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, "ecstasy"), a currently popular illicit drug, has been characterized recently as a serotonergic neurotoxin due to its ability to cause long-lasting deficits in markers of central serotonergic function in animals.
