Atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) has been shown to bind to specific receptors on vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) and to cause an increase in intracellular cyclic GMP (cGMP) content. We have recently demonstrated that a prominent Na+,K+,Cl- cotransport system is present in VSMC and that a permeable cGMP analog (8-bromo-cGMP) stimulates activity of the cotransporter.
