AIMS Characterization of the role of CaiC in the biotransformation of trimethylammonium compounds into l(-)-carnitine in Escherichia coli. METHODS AND RESULTS The caiC gene was cloned and overexpressed in E. coli and its effect on the production of l(-)-carnitine was analysed.
