Considerable evidence suggests that the intrarenal renin-angiotensin system plays an important role in diabetic nephropathy. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin II (Ang II) receptor blockers (ARBs) can attenuate progressive glomerulosclerosis in disease models and can slow disease progression in humans.
