Extracellular signals activate mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades to execute complex cellular programs, like proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. In mammalian cells, three MAPK families have been characterized: extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), which is activated by growth factors, peptide hormones and neurotransmitters, and Jun kinase (JNK) and p38 MAPK, which are activated by cellular stress stimulus as well as growth factors.
