Background: While total IgE measurements are often used in clinical practice, it is unclear how they should be interpreted for the diagnosis of allergic disorders. We studied whether total IgE may be used to rule out or predict sensitization and whether there are age or gender differences.

The significance of serum total immunoglobulin E for in vitro diagnosis of allergic rhinitis

The utility of total serum IgE in the in vitro diagnosis of allergic rhinitis is determined and the value of total IgE level in select populations undergoing in vitro allergy testing remains unknown.

Role of Three Different Laboratory Tests in Demonstrating Sensitization to Various Allergens in Common Atopic Disorders

Sixty one cases with history of atopy in the form of allergic rhinitis, asthma, and urticaria/ dermatitis were subjected to allergy profile test during a period of one year to study the role of serum total IgE, serum allergen-specific IgE and Absolute eosinophil count.

IgE in childhood asthma: relevance of demographic characteristics and polysensitisation

In childhood allergic asthma, total and HDM-specific sIgE levels are tightly linked to markers of allergic inflammation but not to pulmonary functions, and are weakly affected by age but not by sex or by the presence of multiple sensitisations.

Relevance of Allergy in Adult Asthma

Whether therapies targeted at the atopic axis help improve asthma outcomes, including lung function indices and exacerbations, and the impact of atopy on asthma diagnosis and severity in adults is addressed.

The authors mention that in 22% of cases the clinician remained uncertain of the diagnosis even after the specific IgE results were available, which could mean that the lack of a total IgE was one of the reasons why appropriate comments were not appended to the results during laboratory validation.

Number of allergens to be tested to assess allergenic sensitization in epidemiologic studies: results of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey I

Background Many clinical and epidemiological studies have measured the prevalence of IgE sensitization using skin tests and/or serum‐specific IgE. Most of them have been done in only one country

Allergic airway diseases in a tropical urban environment are driven by dominant mono-specific sensitization against house dust mites

The aim of this study is to identify allergens and risk factors for the high prevalence of allergic airway disease in the tropical urban environment.

Skin prick testing in children

Information is discussed in detail about the various aspects of SPT including the indications, technique, interpretation of the results, advantages, and limitations ofSPT.

Rationale for specific allergen testing of patients with asthma in the clinical pulmonary office setting.

The importance of allergen testing in patients with asthma—whether by skin testing or by in vitro methods—is reviewed and the advantages, limitations, and interpretation of results derived from each method are highlighted.

Elevated total serum immunoglobulin E (>1000 IU/mL): implications?

Of 352 patients with IgE >1000 IU/mL seen in the authors' hospital over a 5‐year period, less than 50% had these conditions, andedly elevated IgE levels in the rest of the patients were associated with asthma, allergic rhinitis and food allergy, instances where the test is of limited diagnostic utility.

A recently developed dipstick test for allergy screening now enables every practitioner to determine total IgE levels within less than one hour, and gives results in four ranges of minor to major allergy, as shown for semiquantitative glucose dipsticks.

Total Serum IgE Concentrations in Adolescents and Adults Using the Phadebas IgE PRIST® Technique

Asthmatic patients had higher mean IgE levels than those who were suffering from either rhinitis or conjunctivitis, and this suggests that the mean total serum IgE concentration is remarkably constant in normal non‐allergic Caucasians.

The use of Phadiatop® in mass‐screening programmes of inhalant allergies: advantages and limitations

As the high percentage of cases in the unselected population had specific serum IgE against inhalant allergens and no allergic symptomatology, the Phadialop‐positive predictive value falls to 53.7%, thus creating the need for Phadiatop‐ positive subjects to undergo further investigation for an appropriate diagnosis.

Evaluation of the Phadiatop® test in an epidemiological study

It is concluded that the Phadiatop is a valuable test for the screening of inhalant atopy, and as the percentage binding may reflect the degree of sensitization it could also be applied as a quantitative measure especially for epidemiological purposes.

Serum total IgE levels in a representative sample of a Greek population

The comparison of normal IgE values (nonatopic subjects) from this study with those reported by other investigators revealed that Greek adult males and females had higher IgE levels than populations from other nations.
