Faculty members in a state university were asked to rate the importance of three faculty roles: teaching, research, and contributing to the development of character in students. Faculty in all age groups and disciplines viewed the teaching role as most important. Younger faculty placed greater emphasis on research and less emphasis on character development than did older faculty members.
