The fluorinated boron nitride (F-BN) nanostructures are found to be fully spin polarized and half-metallic by means of first-principles calculations based on the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid functional. It is found that the full spin polarization and 1 μB local moment in F-BN nanotubes are independent of tube radius and it is also robust in planar ribbons and sheets. The long-ranged ferromagnetic coupling between local moments decreases with decreasing tube radius. This suggests that F-BN…

Tunable ferromagnetic spin ordering in boron nitride nanotubes with topological fluorine adsorption.
TLDR
It is found through first-principles calculations that fluorine atoms topologically adsorbed on boron nitride nanotubes induce long-ranged ferromagnetic spin ordering along the tube, offering strong spin polarization around the Fermi level, suggesting a new route to facilitate the design of tunable spin devices.
Stability and Band Gap Constancy of Boron Nitride Nanotubes
Extensive LDA and quasi-particle calculations have been performed on boron nitride (BN) single-wall and multi-wall nanotubes. Strain energies are found to be smaller for BN nanotubes than for carbon
Fluorination-induced magnetism in boron nitride nanotubes from ab initio calculations
Ab initio calculations were conducted to investigate the electronic structures and magnetic properties of fluorinated boron nitride nanotube (F-BNNT). It was found that the chemisorption of F atoms
Magnetism in BN nanotubes induced by carbon doping
We performed ab initio calculation on the pristine and carbon-doped (5,5) and (9,0) BN nanotubes. It was found that carbon substitution for either a single boron or a single nitrogen atom in the BN
Are fluorinated boron nitride nanotubes n-type semiconductors?
The structural and electronic properties of fluorine (F)-doped boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are studied using density functional methods. Our results indicate that F atoms prefer to substitute N
Electronic structures and transport properties of fluorinated boron nitride nanoribbons.
TLDR
The results show that the transition between half-metal and semiconductor in zigzag-edged boron nitride nanoribbons can be realized by fluorination at different sites or by the change of the fluorination level.
Prediction for room-temperature half-metallic ferromagnetism in the half-fluorinated single layers of BN and ZnO
On the basis of density functional calculations we explored the possibility that BN and ZnO single layers can become ferromagnetic at room temperature and half-metallic upon fluorine adsorption.
Fluorine-induced local magnetic moment in graphene: A hybrid DFT study
Recent experimental evidence that fluorinated graphene creates local magnetic moments around F adatoms has not been supported by semilocal density-functional theory (DFT) calculations where the
Diameter-dependent spin polarization of injected carriers in carbon-doped zigzag boron nitride nanotubes
The diameter-dependent spin polarization of zigzag (n, 0) boron nitride nanotubes (5⩽n⩽10) with two carbon atoms substituting one boron atom and one nitrogen atom was investigated using first
Magnetism of C adatoms on BN nanostructures: implications for functional nanodevices.
TLDR
In terms of the diffusion barrier and the adsorption energy of C adatoms on the BN nanotubes/sheets, a fabrication method for BN-C-based functional nanodevices is proposed, and a series of virtual building blocks for functional devices are illustrated.
