}BACKGROUND
Metformin is an oral anti-hyperglycemic agent used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The results of the UK Prospective Diabetes Study indicate that metformin treatment is associated with a reduction in total mortality compared to other anti-hyperglycemic treatments. Metformin, however, is thought to increase the risk of lactic acidosis, and is considered to be contraindicated in many chronic hypoxemic conditions that may be associated with lactic acidosis, such as…

A Comparative Study of Acidosis in Diabetic Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease Patients on and off Metformin
- MedicineCureus
- 2022
In this study, metformin use in CKD diabetic patients did not result in more admissions due to acidosis than non-metformin users, and biguanides, especially met formin, is a known oral hypoglycemic drug used for decades to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus.
The Safety of Metformin in Heart Failure
- MedicineThe Annals of pharmacotherapy
- 2007
Results from 3 trials suggest that metformin may be safe to use in heart failure, and if it is used in patients with heart failure patients should not be recommended routinely but should be monitored closely for signs of lactic acidosis.
Metformin – A Mini Review
- Medicine, Biology

Metformin, being one of the oldest drugs, is the only biguanide agent currently available for treatment of diabetes mellitus and has shown to have multiple non-glycemic benefits: anticancer effects, weight reduction, favorable lipid profile, and neuro protective effects.

Advantages of the use of metformin in patients with impaired uric acid metabolism
- Medicine, BiologyTerapevticheskii arkhiv

Current data suggest that the mechanism of action of metformin contributes to the development of an anti-inflammatory effect, as well as a decrease in the level of uric acid, and its use can be potentially useful in patients with hyperuricemia and gout.

Due to a worldwide increase of type 2 diabetes a further increase in the number of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes mellitus must be assumed although the individual risk for diabetic late complications is declining in some countries.
