}BACKGROUND
The relationship between healthcare-associated pneumonia (HCAP) and resistant bacteria is unclear. The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for pneumonia caused by drug-resistant bacteria (DRB).
METHODS
A prospective cohort study was conducted at a tertiary teaching hospital in Hong Kong. Consecutive older patients (aged ≥65 years) were hospitalized with pneumonia from January 2004 to June 2005. DRB comprised methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA…

The data support inclusion of HCAP within nosocomial pneumonia guidelines and the recommendation that empiric antibiotic regimens for HCAP should be similar to those for HAP and VAP, and little difference in frequencies of Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter are found.

ESBL-producing bacteria isolated from sputum are not likely to be the actual causative organisms of pneumonia, however, 13 of 15 patients showed improvement of pneumonia following the initial antibiotic treatment.

Development and validation of a clinical risk score for predicting drug‐resistant bacterial pneumonia in older Chinese patients
- Medicine, BiologyRespirology

A clinical risk score for predicting drug‐resistant bacterial pneumonia in older patients is developed and validated and it is shown that bronchiectasis, recent hospitalization and severe pneumonia were independent predictors of pneumonia caused by potentially drug‐ resistant (PDR) pathogens.

Although resistance is common in HCAP, not all component criteria for HCAP convey similar risk, and simple scoring tools may facilitate more accurate identification of persons with pneumonia caused by resistant pathogens.
