More than one million patients are treated annually with warfarin in the United States. Several trials have shown that warfarin reduces the risk for stroke among patients with atrial fibrillation [1-5]. Another recent study showed a significant reduction in mortality rate among patients who received warfarin therapy after myocardial infarction [6], and clinical trials of warfarin in the primary prevention of myocardial infarction are ongoing [7].
