OBJECTIVE: To determine predictors of child externalizing (behavioral) and internalizing (emotional) symptoms in a national population sample. METHODS: Data were collected in 3 biennial waves (2004, 2006, and 2008) from 2 cohorts in the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children, initially including 5107 children 0 to 1 year of age and 4983 children 4 to 5 years of age. The primary outcomes were child externalizing and internalizing symptoms. Relationships between potential risk factors and…
Longitudinal trajectories of mental health in Australian children aged 4-5 to 14-15 years
TLDR
Examination of maternally-reported child mental health in a population-representative study of children aged 4–5 years to 14–15 years showed that child sex, maternal mental health, socio-economic status, maternal hostility, and child temperament are all independent contributors to childmental health at age 4.
How many children in Australia are at risk of adult mental illness?
TLDR
It is found that modifiable risk factors for adult mental illness occur at the earliest stage in the life course and at greater prevalence than is commonly recognised.
Negative Events in Childhood Predict Trajectories of Internalizing Symptoms Up to Young Adulthood: An 18-Year Longitudinal Study
TLDR
Negative childhood events were associated with an increased likelihood of concurrent internalizing symptoms which sometimes persisted into adulthood, and can contribute to the onset of children's lasting psychological difficulties.
Do risk factors for adolescent internalising difficulties differ depending on childhood internalising experiences?
TLDR
Findings of this study confirm the continuity of childhood mental health problems and the role of individual and family characteristics in the aetiology of adolescent internalising difficulties.
Predictors of mental health competence in a population cohort of Australian children
TLDR
A novel measure of mental health competence within the framework of the Australian Early Development Index, a three-yearly national census of early child development, shows promise as a population-level indicator with the potential benefit of informing and evaluating evidence-based public health intervention strategies that promote positive mental health.
Trajectories of childhood internalizing and externalizing psychopathology and psychotic-like experiences in adolescence: A prospective population-based cohort study
TLDR
Analysis of adolescent PLEs with four trajectories of internalizing and externalizing psychopathology provides important insights regarding potential targets and timing for delivery of early intervention and prevention programs.
Mal adaptive Parenting and Child Emotional Symptoms in the Early School Years: Findings from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children
EMOTIONAL SYMPTOMS ARE ONE of the primary manifestations of child mental health problems. The current study investigated whether being exposed to maladaptive parenting (high hostility and low warmth)
Maternal childhood abuse predicts externalizing behaviour in toddlers: A prospective cohort study
TLDR
Maternal childhood abuse consistently predicted increased externalizing behaviour in the offspring, and this study suggests that childhood abuse impacts subsequent generations.
Risk and protective factors for mental health problems in preschool-aged children: cross-sectional results of the BELLA preschool study
TLDR
The results underline the importance of children’s difficult temperamental characteristics as a risk factor for mental health in preschoolers and suggest that these may also be an appropriate target for prevention of preschool MHPs.

Early risk indicators of internalizing problems in late childhood: a 9-year longitudinal study.
TLDR
Predictors from as early as 2-5 years of age are relevant for identifying children at risk of internalizing problems in late childhood and can help to identify children who are most in need of preventive interventions and help to assess the potential health gain and efficiency of such interventions.
Early childhood aetiology of mental health problems: a longitudinal population-based study.
TLDR
The consistent and cumulative predictors of externalising behaviours were parent stress and harsh discipline and Predictors of internalising behaviours included small family size, parent distress, and parenting.
Pre- and postnatal influences on preschool mental health: a large-scale cohort study.
TLDR
Interventions targeting adverse prenatal, perinatal and postnatal influences can be expected to improve mental health outcomes for children in the early years.
Longitudinal Predictors of Behavioural Adjustment in Pre-Adolescent Children
TLDR
The research confirms the persistence of early appearing behaviour problems in a community sample and the longitudinal influence of temperament factors in childhood and supports the need for a focus on early intervention and prevention strategies in the child mental health field.
Population level assessment of the family risk factors related to the onset or persistence of children's mental health problems.
TLDR
It is indicated that the studied population may benefit the most from preventive interventions that address parenting practices and treatment interventions that addressed parenting practices, and parental mood problems, conflict, antisocial behaviour, and psychiatric disorders.
Environmental risk and young children’s cognitive and behavioral development
Using a longitudinal, large-scale sample of British twins, we addressed the prediction of both cognitive abilities and behavioral adjustment from eight domains of environmental risk: minority status,
Prediction of anxiety symptoms in preschool-aged children: examination of maternal and paternal perspectives.
TLDR
The results support theories of the development of anxiety, especially the role of parental and external environmental factors, and point to possible targets for prevention of heightened anxiety in young children.
Early Risk Factors for Adolescent Antisocial Behaviour: An Australian Longitudinal Study
TLDR
Few studies have assessed early predictors of antisocial behaviour in Australia and the current results can be used to inform prevention programs that target risk factors likely to lead to problem outcomes for Australian youth.
Trajectories of externalizing behavior from age 2 to age 9: relations with gender, temperament, ethnicity, parenting, and rater.
TLDR
According to ratings by both mothers and caregivers/teachers when children were 2, 3, 4, 7, and 9 years old, externalizing behavior declined with age; however, mothers rated children as higher in Externalizing behavior than did caregivers and teachers.
The development and maintenance of anxiety symptoms from infancy through adolescence in a longitudinal sample
TLDR
A developmental model of the etiology and maintenance of anxiety symptoms in childhood and highlight factors to consider in efforts to prevent and treat childhood anxiety are supported.
