Risk Aversion and Incentive Effects: Comment
@article{Harrison2004RiskAA, title={Risk Aversion and Incentive Effects: Comment}, author={Glenn W. Harrison and Eric J. Johnson and Melayne Morgan Mcinnes and Elisabet E. Rutstr{\"o}m}, journal={Behavioral \& Experimental Economics}, year={2004} }
Holt and Laury, AER 2002, develop an experimental design to determine the risk aversion of an individual. They use their observations to argue that increased incentives appear to change risk attitudes, leading to greater risk aversion. However, their main treatment, the effects of scaling up the stakes of the lottery choice task, is confounded by a simple order effect. We extend their design to test for these order effects, and show that they are indeed significant. The size of the stakes still…

In this paper we show that the wildly popular Holt and Laury (2002) risk preference elicitation method confounds estimates of the curvature of the utility function, the traditional notion of risk…
The Effect of Payment Methods on Risk Aversion

Risk aversion experiments such as those by Holt and Laury (2002, 2005) measure risk aversion by examining subjects’ responses to a series of probability-ordered choices. Subjects are paid real money…
Do as I Do, Not as I Say: Incentivization and the Relationship Between Cognitive Ability and Risk Aversion

We study how the use of real and hypothetical choices to elicit risk preferences affect the statistical relationship between cognitive ability and risk aversion. Our experimental results suggest that…
ON THE LINKAGE BETWEEN FINANCIAL RISK TOLERANCE AND RISK AVERSION
- Economics

We explore the linkage between financial risk tolerance (FRT) and risk aversion. To do this, we obtain FRT scores from a psychometrically validated survey and conduct a battery of online lottery…

We propose a new method to elicit individuals' risk preferences. Similar to Holt and Laury

We present a new experimental evidence of how framing affects decisions in the context of a lottery choice experiment for measuring risk aversion. We investigate framing effects by replicating the…

Estimating risk attitudes about choices with large stakes remains problematic. Using hypothetical choices with large stakes is one possible solution to the dilemma, but there is some evidence to…

Eliciting Risk and Time Preferences

The main results based on exponential discounting are robust to alternative specifications such as hyperbolic discounting and have direct implications for attempts to elicit time preferences, as well as debates over the appropriate domain of the utility function when characterizing risk aversion and time consistency.

We examine the properties of a popular method for eliciting choices and values from experimental subjects, the multiple price list format. The main advantage of this format is that it is relatively…

We elicit individual preferences over social risk. We identify the extent to which these preferences are correlated with preferences over individual risk and the well-being of others. We examine…
