A novel spotted fever group Rickettsia was found in Haemaphysalis sulcata ticks collected from sheep and goats in Croatia in 2006. At the same time, a genetically identical organism was co-isolated with the embryonic cell line CCE3 obtained from the soft tick Carios capensis in Georgia, USA. In this study, further phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of the novel rickettsial strain present in H. sulcata ticks were investigated. Based on the cultivation of bacteria in mosquito and Vero cell…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Rickettsia lusitaniae sp. nov. isolated from the soft tick Ornithodoros erraticus (Acarina: Argasidae).
Rickettsia buchneri sp. nov., a rickettsial endosymbiont of the blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis.
TLDR
It is demonstrated that the isolate obtained from the ovaries of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, fulfils the criteria to be classified as a representative of a novel rickettsial species closely related to 'Rickettsia monacensis'.
Diversity of Rickettsia in Ticks Collected in Abruzzi and Molise Regions (Central Italy)
TLDR
A survey on ticks collected form animals and humans was carried out with the aim to identify the Rickettsia species circulating in Abruzzi and Molise regions, making evidence of high rate of infection in ticks.
Characterization of a novel transitional group Rickettsia species (Rickettsia tillamookensis sp. nov.) from the western black-legged tick, Ixodes pacificus.
TLDR
A previously unrecognized Rickettsia species was isolated in 1976 from a pool of Ixodes pacificus ticks collected in 1967 from Tillamook County, Oregon, USA and remained unevaluated by molecular techniques and was not identified to species level for the subsequent 30 years.
Detection of Rickettsia spp. in Haemaphysalis ticks collected in La Rioja, Spain.
TLDR
This study suggests that H. inermis could be a vector for tick-borne spotted fever caused by R. aeschlimannii in the north of Spain and further studies on characterization and culture of rickettsial endosymbionts found in Haemaphysalis spp.
One Health Approach to Rickettsiosis: A Five-Year Study on Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae in Ticks Collected from Humans, Animals and Environment
TLDR
Ticks collected from animals submitted to necropsy, removed from humans in local hospitals and collected from the environment were identified and tested by PCR for Rickettsia spp.

Isolation of Cell Lines and a Rickettsial Endosymbiont from the Soft Tick Carios capensis (Acari: Argasidae: Ornithodorinae)
TLDR
In isolation and partial characterization of two embryonic cell lines from the seabird soft tick Carios capensis, the rickettsia was identified as a symbiont of C. capensis and will be useful to researchers investigating interactions between soft ticks and microorganisms, soft tick physiology, and molecular biology.
Comparative OmpA gene analysis of Rickettsia felis-like bacteria detected in Haemaphysalis sulcata ticks and isolated in mosquito C6/36 cell line
TLDR
Results of analysis of ompA sequences from fragment A demonstrated the presence of a unique species of Rickettsia, which is proposed as a new SFG speciesRickettsia croatica, strain Kastelanii.
Detection and Identification of Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae in Ticks Collected in Southern Croatia
TLDR
This study extends the knowledge of the geographic distribution of SFG rickettsiae and indicates that at least two of them, with yet uncertain pathogenicity to humans, are present in ticks in southern Croatia.
A Follow‐up Study on Newly Recognized Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae in Ticks Collected in Southern Croatia
The aim was to study the impact of environmental conditions on seasonal population dynamics of tick species found in southern Croatia with the consequence on rickettsiae vectored by them. Efficiency
Phylogenetic analysis of the genus Rickettsia by 16S rDNA sequencing.
Ultrastructural evidence of the ehrlichial developmental cycle in naturally infected Ixodes persulcatus ticks in the course of coinfection with Rickettsia, Borrelia, and a flavivirus.
TLDR
Ehrlichia-infected salivary gland cells had lysed cytoplasm, suggesting pathogenicity of E. muris for the tick host at the cellular level, as well as potential transmission during feeding.
Gene Sequence-Based Criteria for Identification of New Rickettsia Isolates and Description of Rickettsia heilongjiangensis sp. nov
ABSTRACT We propose genetic guidelines for the classification of rickettsial isolates at the genus, group, and species levels by using sequences of the 16S rRNA (rrs) gene and four protein-coding

TLDR
Rickettsialpox would be diagnosed more frequently and over a wider geographic area if physicians gave greater consideration to the diagnosis and if laboratory diagnostic methods were better able to distinguish among spotted fever group rickettsioses.
Molecular Identification of Rickettsia felis‐like Bacteria in Haemaphysalis sulcata Ticks Collected from Domestic Animals in Southern Croatia
TLDR
Molecular analysis of the complete gltA gene and portion of 17 kDa and ompB genes revealed the presence of Rickettsia felis‐like bacteria in up to 26% of tested ticks.
