}SUMMARY The ommatidia that constitute the compound eyes of flies contain eight photoreceptor cells, which are divided into two classes: the peripheral photoreceptors, R1–6, and the central photoreceptors, R7 and R8. In the fruit fly, Drosophila, R1–6 express the same rhodopsin (Rh1), whilst the R7 and R8 of a given ommatidium express either Rh3 and Rh5, or Rh4 and Rh6, respectively. We have studied whether this expression pattern of rhodopsins is conserved in the blowfly Calliphora vicina. We…

Developmental evolution of the insect retina: insights from standardized numbering of homologous photoreceptors.
- BiologyJournal of experimental zoology. Part B, Molecular and developmental evolution
- 2011
A universal photoreceptor subtype classification key that relates to the Drosophila numbering system is introduced and the underappreciated role of R8 as ancestral color receptor is discussed, as well as evidence of functionally imposed ground rules of differential opsin expression.
Evolutionary conservation of opsin gene expression patterns in the compound eyes of darkling beetles.

Documenting a deep conservation of photoreceptor subtype-specific opsin gene expression in this range of darkling beetles provides a first point of reference for broader comparative studies of retinal organization in the Coleoptera.
Stochastic spineless expression creates the retinal mosaic for colour vision

It is suggested that the entire retinal mosaic required for colour vision is defined by the stochastic expression of a single transcription factor, Spineless.
Evolution of Eye Morphology and Rhodopsin Expression in the Drosophila melanogaster Species Subgroup

The data suggests that the morphology and functional properties of the compound eyes vary considerably within and among these closely related Drosophila species and may be part of coordinated morphological changes affecting the head capsule.
Ommatidial type‐specific interphotoreceptor connections in the lamina of the swallowtail butterfly, Papilio xuthus
- BiologyThe Journal of comparative neurology
- 2006
The eye of the butterfly Papilio xuthus contains a random array of three types of ommatidia (types I–III), each bearing nine photoreceptors, R1–R9, which presume that R3 and R4 construct a system for motion vision, whereas other randomly distributed spectral types provide inputs for color vision.
The retinal mosaics of opsin expression in invertebrates and vertebrates
- BiologyDevelopmental neurobiology
- 2011
Despite distinct evolutionary origins, as well as major differences in morphology and phototransduction machineries, there are significant similarities in the stepwise cell‐fate decisions that lead to terminally differentiated photoreceptors that express a particular opsin.
Phylogenomics of Opsin Genes in Diptera Reveals Lineage-Specific Events and Contrasting Evolutionary Dynamics in Anopheles and Drosophila

Overall, the findings indicate an extremely variable pattern of opsin evolution in dipterans, showcasing how two similarly aged radiations, Anopheles and Drosophila, are characterized by contrasting dynamics in the evolution of this gene family.

Evolution of Visual Performance-associated Genes in Drosophila
- Biology
- 2010
Comparative genomic analysis revealed that gene duplication played an unusually important role during this final stage of Drosophila vision evolution, and select gene-specific studies uncovered specific cis-regulatory and coding region changes that were of key importance in the evolution the Drosphila phototransduction and retinal organisation.
