PURPOSE This was a radioisotope study of nasal mucociliary clearance of total and subtotal nasal obstruction. METHODS Rhinoscintigraphy was performed by insufflating 1.85 MBq (69 mCi) Tc-99m MAA in 20 patients. Six cases were regarded as the control group, because the presence of small spurs does not affect nasal patency. The remaining 14 patients had various rhinopathic conditions. Two regions of interest were selected, one in the nasal cavity and one in the pharynx. Mucociliary transport…
Rhinoscintigraphic analysis of nasal mucociliary function in patients with Bell's palsy.
TLDR
A compensatory mechanism could be the underlying reason for faster MCT rate on the nonparalyzed side in Bell's palsy patients when compared to the paralyzed side and the control subjects.
The Impact of Unilateral Concha Bullosa on Mucociliary Activity: An Assessment by Rhinoscintigraphy
TLDR
The study showed that unilateral CB might impair NMCR in the ipsilateral side of the nasal cavity, and surgical intervention to reduce the middle concha volume may result in a better mucociliary clearance with possibly a less chance of development of chronic sinus diseases and nasal pathologies.
Evaluation of nasal mucociliary clearance after medical or surgical treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis
TLDR
The various groups of chronic rhinosinusitis patients cannot be differentiated on the basis of possible nasal mucociliary clearance alternations, and multiple linear regression could not prove a statistically significant correlation between MTV and other variables.
Is mucociliary transport velocity related to symptoms in chronic rhinosinusitis patients?
TLDR
Although rhinoscintigraphy is widely accepted as a reliable test of mucociliary velocity and clearance, it did not correlate with subjective measures of the severity of CRS.
Evaluation of the nasal mucociliary transport rate by rhinoscintigraphy before and after surgery in patients with deviated nasal septum
TLDR
It was concluded that the septoplasty operation improves reduced NMTRs after surgery and the effect of nasal surgery on nasal mucociliary activity may be more accurately evaluated in the third month than the first month of post-operative period.
Evaluation of the Effects of Nasal Septal Deviation and its Surgery on Nasal Mucociliary Clearance in Both Nasal Cavities
TLDR
The results of this study showed that NSD significantly impaired NMCVs in both sides and that septoplasty significantly improved NMCV in both parts of the nose.
Evaluation of Nasal Mucociliary Functions with Rhinoscintigraphy in Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis
TLDR
The findings demonstrated a synergistic detrimental effect of smoking with coal dust exposure on nasal transport time in coal workers with pneumoconiosis and healthy controls by using technetium-99m-labeled macroaggregated albumin rhinoscintigraphy.
Changes occurring in the nasal mucociliary transport in patients with one-sided septum deviation.
TLDR
The mucociliary activity was within normal limits in patients with septum deviation who didn't have a nasal mucosal disease and was found to be increased on the concave side where the airflow was higher.
Evaluation of nasal mucociliary activity in patients with chronic renal failure
TLDR
Clinicians must keep in mind that NMC time in CRF patients is prolonged and must follow-up these patients more closely for sinonasal and middle ear infections.

A roentgenographic method for measuring nasal mucous velocity.
TLDR
The saccharin test of nasal mucous transport was unsatisfactory because of inability to repeat the test more often than 1-2 h and its propensity to produce mild discomfort in a significant number of subjects.

TLDR
There is a significant decrease in the nasal mucociliary clearance of patients with nasal polyposis, according to the saccharin test, compared with a control group of 20 healthy subjects.
Method for in Vivo Measurement of Mucociliary Activity in the Human Nose
TLDR
The method showed good reproducibility regarding recordings from different spots on the mucosa and on a day-to-day basis and is the first report of a method suitable for in vivo studies of the mucociliary effects of challenge with autonomic agonists and airway irritants in humans.
Nasal polyps: a comparative study of morphologic and etiopathogenetic aspects.
TLDR
Some peculiar findings concerning the mucosal layer of the polyps and of the inferior turbinates of three confirmed allergic subjects are described and their possible clinical implications are described.
Value of the Tc99m particle test and the saccharin test in mucociliary examinations.
TLDR
The present study shows that mucociliary activity is considerably influenced by ventilation and that under pathological conditions both tests should be used as complementary investigational methods.
Testing ciliary activity in patients with chronic and recurrent infections of the upper airways: Experiences in 68 cases
TLDR
Biopsy specimens of the nasal mucosa were investigated by means of phase contrast microscopy in 68 patients with chronic and recurrent infections of the upper airways, and in 19 cases an absent or extremely weak ciliary activity could be demonstrated.

TLDR
A new computerized technique for the assessment of human nasal ciliary beat frequency is described, which is believed to represent a significant advancement in the evaluation of ciliary function and should assist in the diagnosis of patients with congenital and acquired forms ofciliary dysmotility.
Messung Des Schleimhauttransportes in Menschlichen Nase Mit 51Cr Markierten Harzkügelchen

A versatile and quantitative computer-assisted photoelectronic technique used for the analysis of ciliary beat cycles.
TLDR
Results suggest that ciliary beat frequency may be regulated either by modifying the rates of dynein-microtubule interactions or the rate of transition from one beat phase to the next.
