Infection by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is characterized by a myriad of clinical manifestations affecting almost every organ system in the body. During this infection, the immune system becomes dysfunctional because of the existence of immunodeficiency and immune hyperactivity, and a disregulated production or activity of cytokines.
