The specter of crisis haunts the capitalist world. Indeed, it was an all too familiar phenomenon throughout less-industrialized countries in the second half of the twentieth century, and especially in Latin America during the 1980s’ debt crisis. The usage of the term crossed the Rubicon in the post–Lehman Brothers world and has now entered everyday language among the world’s advanced capitalist societies in a way not seen since the Great Depression.
