Dandruff is a common scalp disorder affecting almost half of the postpubertal population of any ethnicity and both genders. It may, however, represent a stubborn esthetical disturbance often source of pruritus. Skin biocenosis, in particular the Malassezia spp. flora, plays a key aetiologic role, in combination with the unusual capacity of some corneocytes to be coated by these yeasts. Substantial evidence indicates that keratinocytes play an active role in the generation and expression of…
Stratum corneum dysfunction in dandruff
TLDR
Dandruff is characterized by a flaky, pruritic scalp and affects up to half the world’s population post‐puberty, and treatment of dandruff with cosmetic products to directly improve SC integrity while providing effective antifungal activity may thus be beneficial.
TOPICAL TREATMENT OF SEBORRHOEIC DERMATITIS AND DANDRUFF: AN OVERVIEW
TLDR
Treatment options for dandruff appear to be related to the composition of the sebaceous gland secretions, the proliferation of Malassezia yeasts, and the host immune response.
Changes in epidermal morphology associated with dandruff
TLDR
The objective of this study was to fully characterize epidermal morphology in dandruff compared to healthy scalp skin and to evaluate potential mechanisms underlying any changes observed.
Clinical recognition and management of alopecia in women of color,☆
A comprehensive pathophysiology of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis - towards a more precise definition of scalp health.
TLDR
New biomolecular capabilities establish a depth of pathophysiological understanding not previously achievable with traditional means of investigation, and biomarkers representing inflammation, hyper-proliferation and barrier function are all perturbed by the D/SD condition and robustly respond to therapeutic resolution.
New perspectives on dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis: lessons we learned from bacterial and fungal skin microbiota
  • L. Paulino
  • Biology, Medicine
    European Journal of Dermatology
  • 2017
TLDR
Data provided new perceptions to aid in the understanding of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, broadening the view of their etiology and the possible roles of microbial communities in symptom development.
What if scalp flora was involved in sensitive scalp onset?
TLDR
The hypothesis is that dysbiosis of cutaneous scalp flora plays a role in the pathogenesis of sensitive scalp, and probiotics and controlled skin pH could replace antibiotics and topical disinfectants.
Dysbiotic Bacterial and Fungal Communities Not Restricted to Clinically Affected Skin Sites in Dandruff
TLDR
Although clinical symptoms of dandruff manifest locally, microbial dysbiosis beyond clinically affected skin sites suggests that subjects undergo systemic alterations, which could be considered for redefining therapeutic approaches.
Topical delivery of climbazole to mammalian skin
Identification of Malassezia Species in Patients with Seborrheic Dermatitis in China
TLDR
Analysis of Malassezia microflora in SD patients by applying a transparent dressing to the lesional skin and using direct detection of fungal DNA using nested PCR suggests non-culture-based methods may more accurately reflect MalasseZiamicroflora constitution.
