Abstruct: In Sub-Saharan Africa, about 80% of land is tilled by hand due to the high risk of African animal trypanosomosis that threatens the survival and use of draught animals. In these areas, trypanocidal drugs both prophylactic and curative are the most widely used methods of trypanosomosis control. Resistance of trypanosomes to trypanocidal drugs has been reported in twenty-one African countries, also a report on trypanocidal drug resistance was recorded outside of Africa; in China…

Drug resistance in African animal trypanosomes: A review
TLDR
Animal African trypanosmiasis (AAT) is the most important factor contributing to the sub potential performance of livestock andsafeguarding the available trypanocidal drugs is mandatory to reduce the devastating impact of the disease.
Combatting African Animal Trypanosomiasis (AAT) in livestock: The potential role of trypanotolerance.
TLDR
New insights into the genetic basis of trypanotolerance are described and the potential of exploring this phenomenon as an integral part of the solution for AAT is discussed, particularly, in the context of African animal production systems.
Are the current animal trypanosomiasis management methods in Kenya complementary or substitutes? Evidence from Kwale County
African animal trypanosomiasis (AAT) and its vectors, mainly tsetse, are a major constraint to livestock production in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Control efforts have been ongoing for decades, but
Influence of Seasonal Cattle Movement on Prevalence of Trypanosome Infections in Cattle in the Maasai Steppe, Tanzania
Animal African Trypanosomosis is a Neglected Tropical Disease with significant impacts to pastoral community livelihoods. Our study sought to determine the influence of seasonal cattle movements on
Examination of antigenic proteins of Trypanosoma cruzi to fabricate an epitope-based subunit vaccine by exploiting epitope mapping mechanism.
TLDR
Experimental validation for the safety and immunogenic behavior of designed vaccine protein is needed and it may be helpful in future to control T. cruzi infection.
Molecular characterization of drug-sensitive and drug-resistant strains of Trypanosoma congolense isolated from Tanzania
TLDR
Genetic characterization and phylogenetic analysis of two stocks of trypanosomes originating from different parts of Tanzania revealed that the two strains are genetically distinct and are related to genotypes described elsewhere in the region.
An invariant Trypanosoma vivax vaccine antigen inducing protective immunity
TLDR
This discovery identifies a vaccine candidate for an important parasitic disease that has constrained the socioeconomic development of sub-Saharan African countries and challenges long-held views that vaccinating against trypanosome infections cannot be achieved.
ANTI-TRYPANOSOMA ACTIVITY OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF NEEM LEAF (Azadirachta indica) ON Trypanosoma evansi IN RATS (Rattus norvegicus)
TLDR
Based on the result of the study, neem leaf extract of 800 mg/kg BW gave the highest reduction of parasitemia in rats infected with T. evansi.
In vivo effect of Commiphora swynnertonii ethanolic extracts on Trypanosoma congolense and selected immunological components in mice
TLDR
Evidence is provided that, in vivo trypanocidal activity of ethanolic bark extracts of C. swynnertonii is probably affected by its negative effect on humoral mediated immune response and its potential as an alternative source of lead compounds for trypanoidal drug discovery is determined.
Isothermal microcalorimetry – A quantitative method to monitor Trypanosoma congolense growth and growth inhibition by trypanocidal drugs in real time
TLDR
A robust protocol is established for the microcalorimetric studies of T. congolense and mathematical computations in R are developed to calculate different parameters related to growth and the kinetics of drug action, demonstrating the feasibility and benefit of the method with the two standard drugs.

Detection of multiple drug-resistant Trypanosoma congolense populations in village cattle of south-east Mali
TLDR
The best-bet strategy this study recommended for areas with multiple drug resistance included area-wide community tsetse control, control of co-infections to exploit self-cure against resistant trypanosome populations and the rational use of trypanocidal drugs which should be urgently promoted at all levels as a way of containing or reversing resistance.
Field studies of drug-resistant cattle trypanosomes in Kénédougou Province, Burkina Faso.
TLDR
The demonstration of widespread resistance to both isometamidium and diminazene has important implications, as administration of trypanocides is the most commonly employed method to control trypanosomosis in this area.
Improved PCR-RFLP for the Detection of Diminazene Resistance in Trypanosoma congolense under Field Conditions Using Filter Papers for Sample Storage
TLDR
A BclI-PCR-RFLP was developed for the molecular diagnosis of DA resistance in T. congolense, the most widely used trypanocidal drug, and has been transferred to a network of regional reference laboratories in West, East, and Southern Africa for use in large-scale surveys.
Study on the assessment of drug resistance on Trypanosoma vivax in Tselemti woreda , Tigray, Ethiopia
TLDR
Where there are indications for drug resistance against isomethamidum and diminazene aceturate the use of trypanocidal drugs should be supervised, the principle of sanative pairs has to be applied and chemotherapy needs to be integrated with other methods like vector (tsetse and biting flies) control.
Standardised tests in mice and cattle for the detection of drug resistance in tsetse-transmitted trypanosomes of African domestic cattle.
TLDR
Tests in cattle are described that may be used to determine the efficacy of recommended curative doses of trypanocidal drugs for the treatment of infection with individual trypanosome isolates, including Trypanosoma vivax, which is rarely infective for mice.
Application of field methods to assess isometamidium resistance of trypanosomes in cattle in western Ethiopia.
TLDR
The two indices used in assessing isometamidium resistance, namely the proportion of infections during an 8-week follow-up period and the ratio of mean hazards in an isometricamidium treated versus untreated group, provided consistent results across the three villages.
Ghibe river basin in Ethiopia: present situation of trypanocidal drug resistance in Trypanosoma congolense using tests in mice and PCR-RFLP.
A cross-sectional study was carried out in the Ghibe valley from August to October 2010. 411 head of cattle were sampled in eight villages for buffy coat examination (BCE) and blood spots were
Development of multiple drug resistance of Trypanosoma congolense in Zebu cattle under high natural tsetse fly challenge in the pastoral zone of Samorogouan, Burkina Faso.
TLDR
The appearance of a multiple-drug-resistant strain of T. congolense emphasizes the urgent need for new chemical substances as trypanocidal drugs and the increasing importance of efficient vector control.
Isolation of drug-resistant strains ofTrypanosoma congolense from the Lower Shabelle Region of southern Somalia
TLDR
The results indicate that drug resistance could be an important constrain on the use of trypanocidal drugs to control trypanosomosis in Somalia.
Drug sensitivity screening in vitro of populations of Trypanosoma congolense originating from cattle and tsetse flies at Nguruman, Kenya.
TLDR
An in vitro assay that utilises in vitro-derived metacyclictrypanosomes was used to determine the drug sensitivity of 7 populations of Trypanosoma congolense collected from cattle and tsetse flies at Nguruman; a trypanosomiasis-endemic area in southwest Kenya, thereby enabling development of appropriate control measures for particular areas.
