The lapidary dismissal of my theme by the great Henri Pirenne, writing in 1934, has only been seriously questioned since about 1970. Recent research on the relationship between Habsburg Spain and the Netherlands, for centuries a neglected field, has suddenly become popular among historians; and without exception, the assertions of Pirenne have been repudiated. So much material is now available in print that
