Xenotropic murine leukemia virus–related virus (XMRV) was recently discovered in human prostate cancers and is the first gammaretrovirus known to infect humans. While gammaretroviruses have wellcharacterized oncogenic effects in animals, they have not been shown to cause human cancers.
