The rationale for using retinoids in the prevention of respiratory epithelium cancers is based on their ability to coordinately regulate differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis. The complex retinoid signaling pathways and their cross-reactions are modulated by multiple mechanisms that are gradually being elucidated.
