BACKGROUND Vitamin A is an important regulator of the human immune system, especially in the gut. Recent studies have revealed that retinoic acid (RA) in gut-associated dendritic cells (DCs) enhances the transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta-dependent conversion of naïve T cells into regulatory T (Treg) cells.
