ial gital ce, on. al 003 Abstract. Many different descriptions of Retinex methods of lightness computation exist. We provide concise MATLABTM implementations of two of the spatial techniques of making pixel comparisons. The code is presented, along with test results on several images and a discussion of the results. We also discuss the calibration of input images and the postRetinex processing required to display the output images. © 2004 SPIE and IS&T. [DOI: 10.1117/1.1636761]

Fast Retinex for color image enhancement: methods and algorithms
TLDR
From this study, an existing algorithm was attempted to improve upon in order to greatly reduce processing time while still achieving a good result which would be judge using a new measure of color constancy.

TLDR
The research on capturing real-life scenes, calculating appearances, and rendering sensations on film and other limited dynamic-range media is recounted and the need for parallel studies of psychophysical measurements of human vision and computational algorithms used in commercial imaging systems is emphasized.

Tuning Retinex parameters
TLDR
This work extends previous work on specifying Retinex parameters by establishing methods that automatically determine values for them based on the input image, and testing these methods on the McCann-McKee-Taylor asymmetric matching data.
Nonlinear contrast enhancement based on the Retinex approach
TLDR
This paper presents a digital image enhancement technique which relies on the application of a nonlinear operator within the Retinex approach and is able to provide good quality, artifacts-free images at a limited computational complexity.
Color Based Image Retrieval of Uncalibrated Images
TLDR
The performance of various color-based retrieval strategies when coupled with Retinex-based pre-processing is examined to see whether, and to what degree, the effectiveness of retrieval is improved, regardless of the strategy adopted.
Color recovery in outdoor environments: a novel integrated approach using retinex, gray world and stretching
TLDR
A new hybrid technique for color recovery, which combines one of the most effective retinex algorithm (McCann99) and the gray world transformation applied at multiple resolutions is provided.

Lightness and retinex theory.
TLDR
The mathematics of a lightness scheme that generates lightness numbers, the biologic correlate of reflectance, independent of the flux from objects is described.
Visual cortex and the Retinex algorithm
TLDR
It is shown how functional or feature maps associated with visual objects such as their position in the visual field, the local orientation of their contours, their texture and surface properties, and some aspects of their color may be used to analyze how visual objects may be represented by integrated neural population activity.

TLDR
It is shown that the retinex algorithm is too sensitive to changes in the color of nearby objects to serve as an adequate model of human color constancy.
A multiscale retinex for bridging the gap between color images and the human observation of scenes
TLDR
This paper extends a previously designed single-scale center/surround retinex to a multiscale version that achieves simultaneous dynamic range compression/color consistency/lightness rendition and defines a method of color restoration that corrects for this deficiency at the cost of a modest dilution in color consistency.

Estimating the scene illumination chromaticity by using a neural network.
TLDR
A multilayer neural network is described that is able to recover the illumination chromaticity given only an image of the scene, which has application to machine vision problems such as object recognition and in digital photography, where uncontrolled scene illumination can create an unwanted color cast in a photograph.
