Background. Traditionally, asphyxiated newborn infants have been ventilated using 100% oxygen. However, a recent multinational trial has shown that the use of room air was just as efficient as pure oxygen in securing the survival of severely asphyxiated newborn infants. Oxidative stress markers in moderately asphyxiated term newborn infants resuscitated with either 100% oxygen or room air have been studied for the first time in this work. Methods. Eligible term neonates with perinatal asphyxia…
Oxidative stress in asphyxiated term infants resuscitated with 100% oxygen.
TLDR
Because there are no advantages to resuscitation with 100% oxygen, room air may be preferred under certain circumstances for the resuscitation of asphyxiated neonates.
Six Years of Experience with the Use of Room Air for the Resuscitation of Asphyxiated Newly Born Term Infants
TLDR
Significant oxidative stress was found in the OxR group at 28 days of postnatal life when compared with normal control infants and the RAR group, and oxygen concentrations used during the resuscitation of newly born infants should be strictly monitored.
Air or 100% oxygen for asphyxiated babies? Time to decide
TLDR
Key areas include defining the best resuscitation practice for the preterm infant, designing adequate multicentre, randomised and blinded studies of term newborn resuscitation with adequate outcome data, and pursuing intense experimental research into the mechanisms and prevention of injury from oxygen free radicals.
Resuscitation of Severely Asphyctic Newborn Pigs with Cardiac Arrest by Using 21% or 100% Oxygen
TLDR
In this animal model of severe perinatal asphyxia, resuscitation with room air seemed to be as safe and effective as the use of 100% oxygen.
Room-air resuscitation causes less damage to heart and kidney than 100% oxygen.
TLDR
The use of room air on resuscitation causes less oxidative stress and damage to heart and kidney than pure oxygen, and both asphyctic groups showed oxidative stress when compared with the control group.
Hyperoxemia caused by resuscitation with pure oxygen may alter intracellular redox status by increasing oxidized glutathione in asphyxiated newly born infants.
TLDR
It is hypothesized that hyperoxemia may be 1 of the triggering factors responsible for an increased oxidation of GSH (reduced glutathione), and an increased antioxidant enzyme activity, which reflects an oxidative stress, indicates that the antioxidant capacity of the newly born infant may have been surpassed.
Normoxic versus hyperoxic resuscitation in pediatric asphyxial cardiac arrest: Effects on oxidative stress
TLDR
Resuscitation with 100% oxygen leads to increased oxidative stress in a model of pediatric asphyxial cardiac arrest that mimics pediatric cardiac arrest, which may be prevented by using room air or giving an antioxidant with100% oxygen resuscitation.
Resuscitation of Preterm Neonates by Using Room Air or 100% Oxygen
TLDR
Resuscitation with room air failed to achieve the authors' target oxygen saturation by 3 minutes of life, and it is recommended that it not be used for preterm neonates.

Resuscitation of Asphyxic Newborn Infants with Room Air or 100% Oxygen
TLDR
This preliminary study did not provide conclusive evidence that roomAir is superior to 100% oxygen in the resuscitation of asphyxiated newborns, although it indicated that room air is as effective as 100%oxy.
Resuscitation of Asphyxiated Newborn Infants With Room Air or Oxygen: An International Controlled Trial: The Resair 2 Study
TLDR
It is hypothesized that room air is superior to 100% oxygen when asphyxiated newborn infants are resuscitated, and a series of animal studies as well as one pilot study indicating that resuscitation can be performed with room air just as efficiently as with100% oxygen are performed.
Recovery from hypopnea in preterm lambs: Effects of breathing air or oxygen
TLDR
Resuscitation with O2 in contrast to room air, delays ventilatory recovery from hypopnea, and the degree of recovery at 2 min was less in the oxygen (O2) breathing group than in the air breathing group, where the arterial oxygen tension returned to normal.
Oxygen at birth and prolonged cerebral vasoconstriction in preterm infants.
TLDR
Differences in oxygen exposure seemed to be the only explanation for the differences in CBF, which was significantly higher in group I than in group II.
Chemiluminescence because of the Production of Reactive Oxygen Species in the Lungs of Newborn Piglets during Resuscitation Periods after Asphyxiation Load
TLDR
The luciferin derivative 2-methyl-6-[4-methoxyphenyl]-3,7-dihydroimidazo [1,2-α] pyrazin-3-one (MCLA) was used to investigate the amount of reactive oxygen species produced during resuscitation after asphyxiation load in newborn piglets, demonstrating the possibility of measuring reactive oxygen Species in vivo and in situ using MCLA.
Ventilatory and metabolic responses to acute hyperoxia in newborns.
TLDR
In newborn humans, as in other newborn species, the normoxic metabolic rate seems to be limited by the availability of O2.
Mechanisms of tissue injury by oxygen radicals: implications for neonatal disease
TLDR
The hypothesis that an oxygen radical disease exists in preterm infants has recently been strengthened and the new insight into the interaction of oxygen radicals with other systems as excitatory amino acids and the NO system increases the possibility to understand and hence prevent oxygen radical injury in the preterm infant as well as in adults exposed to an increased load of oxygen antioxidants.
The Role of Neutrophils in the Production of Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury in the Neonatal Rat
TLDR
It is concluded that neutrophils contribute to HI brain injury in the neonate and that neutropenia reduced brain swelling by about 70%, and allopurinol alone produced similar protection.
