Soil acidity constraints grain legume production in tropical soils, both limiting Rhizobium survival and reducing nodulation. Strains of rhizobia with greater tolerance to hydrogen-ion concentration have been identified, but the basis for strain differences in pH tolerance has yet to be determined.
