Bronchiolitis caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is a major cause of hospitalization in children under 1 years of age. The disease characteristically does not induce protective immunity. However, a mononuclear peribronchiolar and perivascular infiltrate during RSV infection is suggestive of an immune-mediated pathogenesis.
