If chronic hypercapnia in patients with severe COPD occurs as a consequence of respiratory muscle (RM) weakness or fatigue, we would expect that ventilatory muscle recruitment (VMR) and exercise performance in stable hypercapnic patients would differ from those in eucapnic patients.
