In an attempt to understand the role of the parasternal intercostals in respiration, we measured the changes in length of these muscles during a variety of static and dynamic respiratory maneuvers. Studies were performed on 39 intercostal spaces from 10 anesthetized dogs, and changes in parasternal intercostal length were assessed with pairs of piezoelectric crystals (sonomicrometry).
