THE STUDY of respiratory diseases in children is handicapped by technical difficulties encountered in applying standard methods of measuring pulmonary function, particularly in the youngest age group. Even when nose clip and mouth piece are tolerated, the psychologic reaction to interference with natural breathing is likely to destroy the validity of measurements. The air flow recorder (pneumotachograph) of one of us (L. S.) and associates1appeared to offer a minimum of disadvantages in…

Pulmonary ventilation in infants under one year of age.
TLDR
The purpose of this paper is to describe a method which permits direct measurement of ventilation in infants, and observations which have been extended to infants up to 8.9 months of age are included.
Respiratory patterns and functional development of respiratory centers in premature infants.
TLDR
In the experiments to be reported, it is believed that additional evidence for the importance of the functional state of the respiratory centers is furnished, and the belief that insufficient sensitivity of respiratory centers to hydrogen ion stimuli causes the periodic respiration found by them in premature infants is believed.
Analysis of tidal expiratory flow pattern in the assessment of histamine-induced bronchoconstriction.
TLDR
Analysis of expiratory tidal flow-time patterns predicted a decrease in FEV1 following histamine challenge as did measurement of sGaw, and a further index, dtr/TE, time from the beginning of expiration till the rapid decay of flow begins/expiratory time was evaluated.
Allergy; summaries of the bibliographic material available in the field of otolaryngology for 1949.
TLDR
In a discussion of respiratory allergies Wittich1 points out the extreme frequency with which these conditions occur and discusses the clinical observations in nasal allergy, including the pallor and bogginess of the mucosa, the tendency toward edema and polyposis and the cytology of nasal smears.
