The influence of ammonia oxidising bacteria and bulk organic competition was assessed during laboratory scale activated sludge treatment. Under short and long hydraulic retention time (HRT) and solid retention time (SRT) conditions, bioreactors were supplied with synthetic sewage spiked with 0.04-2.1 mg m(3) d(-1) of steroid estrogens with and without ammonia as a nitrogen source.
