Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) was obtained from infected tomatoes in commercial fields in Arkansas in 1985. A greenhouse screening procedure for identifying tomatoes resistant to TSWV was established using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect infected plants. Symptom expression was variable and symptom expression was not reliable for identifying infected plants.
