A field study was initiated to investigate the influence of application time on the disposition of 100 kg N ha−1 applied as15N-labelled NaNO3 and (NH4)2SO4 to a silty clay soil (a ustic eutropept) under sugarcane (Saccharum hybrid sp.) in Mauritius. The results showed that the vertical and lateral distribution of residual fertilizer N remaining in the soil 2 years after fertilization was not influenced by the chemical nature of N used nor by the time of application.
